Hills LAC has an active Tiny Tots program for children 3 to 5 years of age that encompasses skills based games that are focused on participation and fun. The fundamental skills of running, jumping and throwing are approached through "appropriate" activities for 3-5 year olds. Emphasis is not on competition but on the development of young children and this is incorporated in play and relatively unstructured games.
Games include activities such as running and jumping over rope ladders, mini hurdles, hoops, throwing and catching bean bags or playing with the big parachute. The children also get to participate in 'Athletics' events such as long jump or a 50m run on the track.
These games are managed by our Coordinator, Tyla Slobedman, but still requires parents to remain with their child/ren and assist as instructed.
The Tiny Tots session starts at 9.00am each Sunday home meet and runs for approximately 1 hour. Tiny Tots sessions are also held at the LASA State PB Days and Interclub meets.
LASA have advised:
• Under the rules of the Association Tiny Tots who turn 5 do not “become” Under 6’s.
• Where possible, centres should conduct separate activities for these older Tiny Tots, incorporating more of the regular events that these children will experience as Under 6’s the following year.
• If this is not possible, the 5 year olds may participate with the Under 6 group at Centre competitions; however, they are still Tiny Tots and not under 6 athletes.
• Parents are reminded that these athletes will remain in the Under 6 age group for the whole of the next season.
Here at Hills LAC we do not conduct separate activities for the older Tiny Tots so that means:
• The parent/guardian of a Tiny Tot can allow their child to participate with the Under 6 athletes when they turn 5.
• They will still have a Tiny Tot badge on their Shirt.
• They are ineligible to win the most improved athlete awards for the Under 6 age group as they are still a Tiny Tot.
• These rules apply at our Centre only.
• If they attend LASA events they will compete as Tiny Tots.
